5 Day Fast and Hormonal Health

A 5-day fast … how does it positively impact hormones and overall well-being?

First, let’s talk about insulin. When we eat constantly… especially refined carbs … our insulin levels stay elevated. During a 5-day fast, insulin drops significantly, which gives your body a chance to reset its sensitivity.

For women, better insulin sensitivity can support balanced estrogen and progesterone levels, because blood sugar stability is deeply connected to hormonal harmony.

By day two, energy becomes more stable. That’s because the body shifts into fat-burning mode and starts producing ketones. Stable blood sugar means fewer cortisol spikes… and when cortisol (our stress hormone) is chronically high, it can suppress reproductive hormones. Lowering stress load allows the body to prioritise hormone balance again.

Another big benefit is growth hormone. Fasting naturally increases human growth hormone, which supports metabolism, preserves muscle and cellular repair. This matters for women because healthy muscle mass improves insulin sensitivity and supports long-term hormonal stability.

You also felt less bloated and inflamed. Short-term fasting may reduce systemic inflammation, which can be helpful for women dealing with PMS symptoms or cycle irregularities. Inflammation can interfere with ovulation and progesterone production, so giving the digestive system a break may support better cycle function.

Autophagy, the cellular “clean-up” process, also increases during fasting. While research is still evolving in women specifically, cellular  lean up and repair contributes to overall endocrine health.
