Where Nature becomes Medicine

Winter is always a quieter season here at Wind Spirit. While we take a little pause from our retreats, I find myself returning to what first inspired this place… the extraordinary healing power of nature. There are countless little sanctuaries scattered across the property where I love to sit quietly, listen to the birds, feel the breeze through the trees and simply breathe. It is in these moments of stillness that I remember one of the greatest truths I have learnt over the years: healing happens when we create the space for it.

Long before I became a naturopath, I lived in Japan for five years. It was there that I discovered the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing. I would often escape the intensity of Tokyo and spend weekends wandering through mountain forests. Every time I returned, I felt lighter, calmer and somehow more myself. I didn’t understand the science then, but I knew my body had changed. The pioneering work of Dr Qing Li has shown that trees release natural compounds called phytoncides to protect themselves from insects and disease. When we breathe these compounds into our lungs, our bodies respond in remarkable ways. Stress hormones such as cortisol begin to fall, while our immune system becomes more resilient. His research also found that time spent in the forest increases both the number and activity of our natural killer (NK) cells, the specialised white blood cells that help protect us from viruses and abnormal cells. Even more astonishing, just two days immersed in a forest was shown to enhance immune function for up to 30 days.

This brilliant research reminds us that nature isn’t simply somewhere we visit. It is an active participant in our healing. That is one of the reasons our daily bush walks have always been an essential part of every Wind Spirit retreat. While fasting allows the body to shift into repair mode, reducing inflammation, encouraging autophagy and improving metabolic flexibility… the forest gently calms the nervous system, lowers stress hormones and nourishes the immune system. The two work together in perfect harmony. Here in Australia we are blessed with magnificent eucalyptus forests, where the air is rich with healing plant compounds. Every walk through the bush at Wind Spiritfeels like an invitation to slow down, soften and reconnect with the wisdom of the natural world.

People often arrive believing that the fasting itself will be the most powerful part of their retreat. Yet many leave talking just as much about the quiet walks beneath the trees, the birdsong, the mountain air and the deep sense of peace they discovered along the way.

Perhaps that is because healing isn’t found in one single practice. It is found in the gentle coming together of many things… rest, fasting, stillness, fresh air, connection and time spent immersed in nature.

Sometimes all we need to do is ... slow our pace ... step beneath the trees ... and remember that nature has been quietly teaching us how to heal all along.
