Why Women Need to Fast Differently Than Men

The deeper I dive into the science of fasting, the more I understand that fasting for women is profoundly different to fasting for men.

Hormones shape much of this difference. Men generally operate within a daily hormonal rhythm led primarily by testosterone, while women move within a far more intricate and cyclical hormonal landscape. Oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone ebb and flow throughout the month, influencing energy, mood, metabolism, sleep and emotional wellbeing.

Even through peri-menopause and menopause, the female body remains deeply rhythmic and responsive. Women have long been observed to synchronise naturally with one another and with the cycles of nature itself. There is an innate intelligence within the female body that responds to rhythm, rest and nourishment in a very different way to the male physiology.

As hormone levels shift during the menopausal years, many women experience changes physically, mentally and emotionally. Yet this transition does not need to be viewed as a decline. Increasingly, science is revealing that lifestyle practices, particularly fasting, nourishment, sleep and stress regulation, can profoundly support wellbeing during this phase of life.

At the heart of this is metabolic flexibility: the body’s ability to move efficiently between burning glucose for energy and burning fat. Many women spend years locked into a constant “sugar-burning” state through continual eating and elevated stress. A gentle fasting lifestyle helps retrain the body to access fat-burning metabolism more easily, restoring energy, stabilising mood and supporting healthy weight regulation.

There are many ways to approach fasting, and it is important that it feels sustainable, supportive and aligned with each woman’s unique lifestyle and hormonal stage. When approached correctly, fasting can become a deeply empowering practice rather than another restrictive diet.

I am currently completing my coaching certification with Dr Mindy Pelz author of the groundbreaking book Fast Like a Girl. Her work explores how women can use intermittent fasting and occasional longer fasts to support hormonal health and improve metabolic switching between sugar-burning and fat-burning states. This metabolic adaptation is one of the keys to why fasting can feel increasingly natural and sustainable over time.

When this fasting lifestyle is occasionally paired with an extended fast of 3 or more days, the results for long term health, wellness and longevity create a deep metabolic shift that supports body, mind and soul at the deepest of levels.

Menopause, when supported well, can become one of the most powerful, grounded and balanced phases of a woman’s life. I am experiencing this transformation personally, and it is such a privilege to support other women through this transition with compassionate health coaching, fasting education and deeply restorative fasting retreats.

If you are riding the hormonal roller coaster or are struggling with the menopausal shift, please know that specific hormonal health coaching can make a massive difference to support you to find balance and health well into the menopausal years. If you would like more information on health coaching or the fasting path, we would love to hear from you.

We are currently fully booked for our August and September retreats, with limited availability for October, November. and January.

Perhaps this is the moment to gently draw a line in the sand and step towards a new and deeply nourishing chapter of health and wellbeing.
